FOR a second time the spectre of bird flu has raised its head in Britain. A turkey farm in England, where hundreds of birds have developed the bug, has been quarantined. Ten months ago it was just one dead bird, headless and decaying on a Fife shore. Yet the Cellardyke swan, the UK's first confirmed case of the H5N1 strain of avian influenza, had as much of an impact as the Suffolk turkeys. More impact, some experts believe. Discovered in April last year, the Fife bird's carcass sparked a massive response. At one point, the entire Scottish coast was under surveillance as the whole country was on the look out for dead birds. Fully 1100 carcasses were checked for the bug.
