The Ontario Municipal Board will lose much of its power to overturn local planning decisions under legislation to be introduced Monday by the Ontario government. The OMB functions as a court of final appeal for land developers whose projects are rejected by the cities for which they are proposed. The new legislation is expected to put more decision-making authority in the hands of local councils. For example, developers would no longer be able to make their cases to the OMB until they have submitted all of the site and traffic plans requested by a municipality. Under the current rules, they can take their proposal directly to the OMB just six months after they submit it to the local council, whether or not the council has made a decision.
