With portable digital music players well on their way to becoming a $100 billion industry, gadget makers are turning their gaze toward another market: portable video players. Until now, handheld digital video devices have largely been seen as nifty toys with limited use. Transferring movies and other clips to the devices has been difficult, since few companies offered large video selections that you could easily download to your device. That's starting to change, though, thanks to such household names as Apple Computer Inc. and Sony Corp., as well as start-up companies such as Diversified Multimedia LLC.
