Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA, CMCSK) also wants Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) and Nortel (NYSE: NT) to be the first companies to work with it on its Open Transport Initiative, which has two purposes: to develop a single method for managing optical networks -- such as the one Comcast is building -- that use the Internet protocol means of data transmission; and to improve compatibility of the equipment made by various vendors that is used on those types of networks.
