The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday called for more emphasis on the epidemic surveillance system in earthquake-affected areas of Pakistan. Visiting WHO Director General Dr J.W. Lee stressed that it was very important to establish a surveillance system to avoid epidemics although there was no major outbreak of measles, pneumonia and other diseases in the quake-hit areas. During a meeting with Pakistan's Health Minister Mohammad NasirKhan, Lee said that there was no major threat of epidemics in the earthquake-stricken areas of Pakistan-controlled Kashmir as the situation had been brought under control by an effective immunization campaign.

Lee said that the acute phase was over and it was now time to work together for reconstruction and rebuilding of damaged structures.

The WHO head said he was glad to see the measures taken by the Pakistani government, the United Nations and other agencies. Enditem
