Hurricane Rita's assault on Texas and Louisiana has been linked to at least four deaths in Liberty County, including a couple who were killed when a tree fell on their home, authorities said Monday. Meanwhile, as recovery efforts in the county continued, officials said there is no longer a threat of serious flooding below the damaged Lake Livingston dam because they have reduced the flow through its floodgates. The fatalities included two elderly people who apparently died from extreme heat and lack of water late last week while trying to evacuate as the storm approached, emergency officials said. The victims, whose names were not released, were riding in separate vehicles that were caught in the massive traffic jam on Texas 146, said Mike Koen, spokesman for the county's ambulance service.
